Vaquero Heritage Days 2012, San Juan Bautista : Vaquero Heritage Days!!!! That Jane Merrill. She knows how to throw an event, it was packed, and comfortable, all at the same time..so well done, thank you to Jane, (and all the folks who volunteer, and make things "happen"..) Jane delights in fostering the revival of all things Vaquero.. Welcome, to Vaquero Heritage Days. If you haven't heard of San Juan Bautista,the Mission land, a mexican land grant dating from 1836, and originally 34,615 acres the Retreat is part of the original land grand, while the Mission San Juan Bautista, was located only about 2 miles away...(you can see the area was steeped in Vaquero lore, and Vaquero legend). The oaks practically whisper the tales~of generations~ both horse and vaquero past. The town is located just a little down the road from Hollister, and Gilroy, in the coastal hills, where Vaquero legend, really does live, still.. Jane chose the St. Francis Retreat, to hold this event, and a more peaceful place could not have been found. Sweeping oaks, coastal fog in the morning, and the Retreat itself, run by Franciscan Friars, evoked memories of past glories. Bruce Sandifer, always on his game, with a ready smile, and plethora of information, demonstrated just how bits work..how they can become instruments of terror in the wrong hands..and the often times misunderstood spade bit, how it cradles and conforms to a horses mouth, was evident in Bruce's demonstration. Richard Caldwell presented his take on Vaquero Horsemanship, starting out his discourse on the proper way to get on and off your horse, and how tragic events can turn in the blink of an eye..with his focus on safety Richard presented a dynamic performance, demonstrating proper mounting and dismounting techniques, and wowing the crowd with his agility and expertise at Reata roping. Great to see him healthy! Kinda cool, Jo Johnson, brought her Morgan horses, a nice nice palomino, and spoke about the merits of the breed for ranch work, Morgan horses, as you know, date back prior to the Quarter horse registry, and the little yellow horse presented himself with drive and dedication. Evident in Jo's demonstration was the beauty and fluidity of the breed, known for intelligence and stamina, many feel the Morgan horse is ideally suited to ranch roping, and if looks count, boy these horses, and THIS one in particular, are sure lookers... In the market for gear? Oh, man. This place had the best of both old and new..Bruce Haener, with his spade bits, Amy Mundell, and her wild rags, I better just list all the vendors!! There was some loot to be had..AND a raffle, too! Keep your eyes fixed on San Juan Bautista, and Vaquero Heritage Days..and plan to attend! If you long to see where history mirrors reality, this is the place, and thanks to Jane for making sure the hands of the past, hold fast to the hands of today, touching all of our futures, with good horsemanship as our guide. Early Californio~Skills of the Rancho : There is nothing like the song the Reata sings, as she slices the air. Sure. Confident. Within her coils lives a tradition....that only a few choose, it is not the easy path. Skills of the Rancho. What an apropos name for the first annual event held by the Californio Bridle Horse Association. Bruce Sandifers baby. I can remember several years back, when Bruce started thinking about putting an event together. As everyone knows, getting people, cattle horses vendors AND food together...with a facility that will acomodate a crowd, and is roomy enough in the arena department to allow a run down the fence or two, is not an easy job. Thank God, Bruce was determined, and also knew exactly what he wanted...because we were ALL the beneficiaries of this tedious labor of love. The First weekend in February proved that the Viejos of old, were smiling down...just as in the days of old..to capture the escence of a time long past..a tradition that reaches back, and whispers "manana".. don't worry that horse, and don't hurry that horse. In fact how you handle your horse even in the warm up pen is watched, if you rough up a horse or cow...well. No Bueno. To allow an animal to work cattle in a slow, deliberate, way...to think...to be a partner, and encourage him to use his body.... Is almost a lost art. But, not here. Here, you could see the skills of the rancho take form..and believe you had stepped into a by gone era. The mist in the valley that had so long cloaked the traditions,..lifted to reveal there is life. Todavia estoy aqui, I am still here, and the spirits of those gone before, in the half light...they rolled in with the fog~and with a hush..just a hint of their secrets, they surrounded us with their lore~the gear they loved and stories yet to be told around the campfire. Under the same stars, as a winter gather. In the cradle of the same hills as ages ago. The secrets have been revealed. They allowed the breath of a of a tradition to be reborn. Because it is time. Just like the snake and the shake of the reata...stinging it's way through the herd..the traditions came to life. Everyone was welcomed, and brought their finest horses...the gear, all traditional..and as in days of old, the pride of workmanship, the love of craft, was evident, from the silver shining in the sun, to the lazy shoo fly an honest metronome of cadence and gait. There is much that goes in, besides time..to making a bridle horse. Pat Puckett calls it the Disciplined Ride...and that is what it is...no, not harsh or cruel...but the discipline it takes to refine yourself, your skills to communicate in seamless way, from the heart of the horse, to the heart of man. Dos es Uno. Two are one, in this ancient dance of the pacific slope. I hope that as you look through some of these photos, the spirit of the event will come to life, and you can see that the Vaquero lives..in our heart and in our desire to better our horsemanship, and partnership with the horse. Early Californio Skills of the Rancho, where The Bridle horse is elevated as much, maybe moreso then the rider. Somehow, knowing that the Viejos smiled, and the traditions are carried forth, is a very humbling thought. Peter Campbell/Robert Chavez : Welcome to the Peter Campbell clinic, held in Tehachapi, May 8-11, 2010 hosted by Robert Chavez. A blustery weekend..we had wind, and cold, some thunder, a little snow. We had the best lunches, thanks to Terry, the cook.. and a great spirit of "try". And we had the best time. The clinic was well attended. Peter offered colt starting, roping, horsemanship and cattle working. A no nonsense clincian, Peter works hard to make sure the clinic goers understand the principles behind the excercises..the reason why it works..the pieces to the puzzle laid out, so that you can see them, working on the corners then the edges, and by the fourth day, you get the picture. It was an honor for me to photograph this clinic. Watching Celeste and Peter working together to help the little bay filly make it, was a highlight. Seeing Manny the Mustang make progress, and the wonderful black and white colt, Thunder, start his life as a "rider" was a humbling experience. When Melissa got on Thunder for the first time, you will see rain..it was a little cloud burst...with REAL thunder...as if the pony called it down..so we knew he had made it..I love that little horse. Thank you to Maurice, Sandy, Kim, Celeste, Janine, Kelly, Shawn, Melissa, Robert and Chase and Colleen..for just making this a great clinic..auditors galore..it was friendly times. And most of all, thank you to Peter, who reminds us that softness starts in the heart.

Jeremy Dunn Progressive Clinic 1/22/11 : Oh, how I wish you could attend one of our monthly clinics! We started off the new year, with a pretty great group..Stefanie, and Kevin hauled from Ojai, Janine, Stan, Margy, Penny..it.HAD ta be the enchiladas that got them...lol As you look thru these shots..I wanted to focus alot on Jeremy, and some of the basic principles he presents..as most of us know..body language is everything...nothing more important on the ground..This clinic, body position and eye postion, were presented to us..don't look AT your horse..look where you want him to go. Duh. Sounds so simple..in reality it is not..we focused on..ground work..all of us a little rusty from the winter rains...and Jeremy could assess us, on an individual basis. . Jeremy worked quite a bit with Vaquero, a really really nice grey gelding owned by Joe and Rieko. Because Vaquero is very sensitive, plus he is one athletic pony..and interesting he is a horse from Baja, Mexico..never anyone's pet..Jeremy explained to us, that Vaquero while not being fearful..was no nonsense..and if he did not understand --- if you were muddied in your presentation, he would protect himself..and mean it. As opposed to a horse that was all bluff..Mr. Vaquero is all business. Very interesting to see Jeremy, the nuance of his body position..for that is what it is..a suggestion to Vaquero to move a particular way. Can you see it in the photos? The drape in the rope, timing, the slight change in shoulder or chin position..each asking Vaquero for something that he understands..and the expression change on Vaquero..Truly a horse who knows the "dance"..just a shift in Jeremy's thought and Vaquero was with him. Amazes me. All n' all great progress made..great intentions, great horses, and fine folks..what a privlige and honor I love this stuff so much I can hardly stand myself...makes me giggley to have such a great horse on the end of my lead rope...whooohoooooo... So looking forwards to 2011 with you. Next clinic, scheduled for February 26th.. Can't wait to see you. Happy Trails. p..

Vaquero Fiesta 2011 Alturas Cut and Rope : The famed Cut and Rope...proved to be a pretty interesting deal. Cutting cattle of your choice, and then roping a specific cow, was pretty dicey. Numbers on the cattle were hard to read, curled up in the heat of the day! Everyone managed to get it done. The team work of the turn back members of the team made for some fine watching. Horseman's Re-Union 2012 : 6 Days, 20 Horsemen, 40 Colts. If that doesn't get your attention, pronto, then just LOOK at these photos. You know, I have been around horses, and in particular, this type of horsemanship, for 30 years. Yeah. 30. As photographer, I see quite a few things, hired most times for clinic events..I am here to tell you this Horseman's Re-Union, was spectacular. First off, the colts. Pretty breedy, from Madonna/Twissleman legend. Although this was the first annual event, the dates have already been set for next year..In reality this is an international event. with horsemean hailing from Switzerland and Australia, as well. Montana, Wyoming, Idaho..all traveled at great length to make this event a "HAPPENING". And it was. Vendors with bling, silver bits, reatas, Ernie Morris, with stories, and books, reatas and art. Merlie Rupp's daughter brought some fine mecates, twisted by Merlie. There were custom made saddles, and Rodney with his hats. Perfect fit. There were western bird houses, beef jerky, fancy purses. Jewelry. If you have ever desired "it", it was here, waiting for you. The Horsemen, had 6 days, taking on two colts each..luck of the draw...two and three year olds from sires so well known and sought after, Texas Playgun, Athenolena, Barrossab, a gorgeous throughbred, putting some leg and stamina on his youngsters, RP Doolin Leo..Twisselena..to round out the stallions repesented here. These babies were straight outta the pasture. Some halter broke, some not so much. Funny how the draw goes...Ty Van Norman drew full brothers and sisters, a 2 year old, and 3 year old. A friend of mine bought the big lanky bay colt, and I am really gonna watch to see how he does. In 6 days, these horsemen had these youngsters, walk, trot, lope, roping off of..(yeah, I said they threw ropes, caught and held even...Joe Wolters, youngster lead the way on that one, alright.) These colts had to learn to pick up all 4 feet, load in a trailer..you could see the grit in these fine babies. They took the pressure, All of em did. When they were asked to dig down deep, they came right up to meet the horsemen, mentally, and physically, all the way. A testament to fine breeding, where heart counts as much, maybe more, then experience. Everyone in the crowd was rooting for these youngsters, and they made the transition from pasture horse, to horse that belongs. Horse with a futured. Handed to them by these 20 horseman. The colts came out on the other end, on auction day, in front of a packed house, of anxious bidders, loud speakers, banners, tarps you name it these colts rallied, because they had the best of starts. They believed in themselves, and their horsemen. Even I would have been comfortable loping around on them. The Aussies brought their "A" game. We learned the fine art of camp drafting. Holy cow. 40 seconds from the time the gate opens and you roar outta the pen, after the cow, manuver around posts, trees, whatever the designated "obstacle" is, and it ain't easy. The dinner, was fabu. Well how could it not. Baxter Black. Red Steagall. Prime rib, salad, salmon, wine, cheesecake. Did I say wine? Oh, you wine lovers, woulda been in heaven. I have two words for you, that make any event special. And none moreso then this. Dave Stamey. The Buckaroo Man. And Rowly's requested song, the chicken song. We also enjoyed J Parson. Great voice, and sense of humor. Picture in your mind, a full banquet room, with happy people hob knobin' with Larry Mahan, Martin Black, Craig Cameron, Chris Cox, all of the horsemen melted into the crowd, and enjoyed the evening. Every single horseman there, an avid supporter of this event, gracious enough to answer questions about the good progress made by their colts. Honest enough to say where they thought the colt would need extra help. Where else do you get that? I mean the chance to walk up to one of these horsemen, and have them tell you just what they thought about their colts, unhurried, at the meet and greet, the "sign the poster", the "hands on" with people...they were all a boon to this venture. There was both a slient auction, and a wild live auction, with a Nate Wald reata, from Joe Wolters heart, into your hands a treasure..complete with a Dorrance made hondo. Bryan Neubert threw in a double mounted pair of old Flemming spurs, given to him by Ray Hunt. Enough to stop your heart, they were gorgeous. I shoulda bid on those. There were pack trips, and vacations auctioned off, bits, chinks, art work, even the event poster, signed by all horsemen, framed, brought in a whoppin $500.00. It was a grand event. Well worth the price of admission. To watch and see the different ways these talented horsemen, and colts progressed was amazing. Each man, a little different then the next..Aussies with their cracking whips, Antoine with his tarp, Luke with his gunny sack drag..easing these youngsters along to the next level. Oh, no, it wasn't ALL a piece of cake, some of these colts were a little broncy to start with, and who could blame em...but all were going down the road real nice, after day 6. Good to catch up with old pals, and make new ones, all of us looking to next years event. And you should too. It was spectacular. Join us, you won't be sorry. Buck Brannaman/Pasadena 2012 : WELL. The Brannaman Clinic, held in Pasadena, was one of the best clinics, attendance wise, and information wise, I have been to in a long time. It was full, but not gluted. Buck was in great form, funny, fun loving, dead serious, kind, demanding, all at once. Full of the "isms' that we love so much. Ended up having a divorce, between two herd bound ponies, who could not keep away from each other. In about 20 minutes, they decided it was easier to live apart. gotta love it. As you sift thru these photos, I want you to keep an eye out for the big bay horse, with the little star. Proof, that where there is a will, there is a way. This giant horse, a westphalian dark bay, gorgeous. Had been out to pasture for several years..and pretty unmanageable. Couldn't stand tied, throws himself on the ground with intent..buck, rear. Headed for trouble. Stacie decided she needed a project. Pluto, was about to be employed! Janine Roy, worked her magic, taking Pluto, and his opinions of people, and life, not personally, she helped him unravel the chaos, building on his success, two weeks ago this was a horse that could not manage to lead without hurting himself. Stacie rode him, in her first clinic, after only two weeks of ground work. I like these kind of stories. Sitting on the edge of the arena, you never know what it takes for people to GET to this point in their riding. Watching Pluto come out of his shell, and embrace life, with a forward attitude. Seeing Kennedy Stauffer, just a kid herself, ride like she owned it. and hold her own with the likes of an Olympian in the arena. I tell ya. Then the Dog Guru showed up, to see what the "horse whisperer" was all about. Caeser enjoyed the day, it was great to see him flop down in Bucks chair, and watch the doings. All n all, it was a fabulous weekend. Rubbin shoulders with movie stars, dog stars, great riders, 3 deep spectators, and the real star of the show, all the pretty ponies.

brandieextreeeeeeeeem9/3/11 : Brandie Dunn decided it was high time she and Poco get off the ranch (just for the day) and into some local competitions. Make no mistake, a good ranch horse is not only part of the family, but pretty much game for anything that comes their way. The unsung hero of the family, Poco, an own daughter of their good stallion "Cody", did not disapoint. Poco is plain wrap. Not flashy, "just bay". Part of Poco's at home duties mean she is the go to horse for doctoring, branding, lessons for kids, dragin cattle around, puttin up with whatever Sage and Steele can come up with, and being a spot on work horse...need the job done, you'd better be taking Poco. Bread and butter of the JB Cattle Co. Plus, she is Brandie's personal horse. Not a bad gig for the little bay mare. Today, she competed in the Extreme Cowboy Race, held in Bear Valley Springs, just a hop skip and jump away from Tehachapi..Bill Cameron and Matt Sheridan were the judges, and the well rounded "course" included some dry work..fast and slow circles lead changes, mud holes, backing up, drag a tire side pass over a crook-a-daisy log, steep steps, just general "stuff" a ranch horse like Poco knows all about. It is always a puzzle to me what some horses find intimidating, the things that bother them..things they do every day, in real life, become major uh-ohs when the pressure is on..Since this IS a timed event, alot of times, you know, horsemanship goes out the window, as folks try and beat the clock...Brandie decided early on that she would attempt to be precise, rather then sloppy and fast..many of the horses who were rushed had a hard time completing simple tasks that they do every single day. Poco did a great job..and did everything placed before her with her usual can do attitude..and this, her first time away from "home" all by herself, camping out..she is a depended on member of the Dunn family, and Poco wouldn't have it any other way.

Alturas Fiesta 2011 Stock Horse : For me, the Stockhorse competition, is where it is at. One on one. One horse, One man, One cow. Sometimes I wonder what it must have been like, in the land of the Vaqueros, The way they rode, the way they handled stock. This comes as close to that reality, as can be. This arena enables a horse to move, and open up..use their bodies, and, while nothing can compare to outside work, and the freedom that entails, here, where specators are involved, this is a big enough arena. Juan was in attendance. I saw him more then once in the half light, in the faces of the riders. In the silver they adorn their horses with. In the grit and the try of these good horses, from hackamore, to two rein, to straight up. I can hardly wait for next year. By the time that Dave and Lorenzo went, it was just about 8 in the evening...light was a challenge..lights were going on all over town, and I squeaked in a few, but did not intend to short them..xoxo, p. Vaquero Fiesta-Alturas 2011 Progressive Loop : The Progressive Loop, was the first event on Saturday Morning. It is harder then it sounds, and even harder then it looks! Contestants must start with a loop like the Houlihan, and progress to a scoop loop, and end with a roll over loop. Each loop progressively more difficult..Rope a cow, drag it to the box, heel it, lay it down. Of course as the teams got into the herd, the cattle got a little more challenging, as well. Not an easy pen, for sure, but a great time, challenging to the best ropers. As with any event of this magnitude, none of it would be possible without the participation of the many sponsors..Their commitment to the Vaquero Tradtions, is immeasurable! Blessing of the Bikers 2011 : Just when I thought I could not get paid to have more fun, I had MORE fun...lol. As many of you know, I have a special place in my heart for Live Ride Church. Several years ago I got hooked up with Lisa and Ned, who asked me to please come and take some photos. I was welcomed, by all with open arms, open hearts...and alota chrome. I can not get enough. I wish The Blessing of the Bikers happened twice a year! Rest assured, that if you are looking for a church home, this is a great little place to make peace with God, and yourself, too. Bikers come from all over, and yes, many patches are displayed, but this is Holy Ground, and there is a respect for God, and fellow biker, and all are humbled by the magnificence of the Lord. Music, food, kids, bikes. It was all there. This is a blessing of the Bikers. A calling to devine. As you look at these photos, I would like to thank Pastor Rick, for the opportunity to capture the memories, for the comraderie, and for the Blessing that he is to all of us. It takes a special person to Pastor a church, and a very special soul to reach out to those among us, who feel tired, lost, broken, and offer them hope..the only HOPE there is..thank you for a wonderful inspired day. May God continue to bless you all and keep you safe. Live Ride, a Bible based Christian Church providing ministry to all, graciously hosted this event. Their blessings were given to biker, and non biker alike. Pinpointing their relationship with God, as the driving force of this oganization, this ~brotherhood-embracing bikerhood~is graced by deep seeded spirituality, hard won--they welcomed one and all. The rule of the day was Bible in a Baggie...Everyone received a Bible in a Baggie, and Bibles were given as both young and old, saved, and not-so-saved received their blessing. All things wheeled were blessed, from garden tractor to soft tail, even bikes that you pedal were present to be graced, found themselves in the comfort received by these blessings. The eats were excellent, great bbq, hot dogs, burgers, the works, the rocking Christian band---all of us, including myself were humbled by the events of the day. I was thankful for the oppoturnity to do what I love- camera-in-hand, capture the spirit of this day. I loved this.. Sundowners, Angels, and many more colors partook of the blessing and festivities, as you scroll through these photos, you will see diversity in patches ..but what will strike you is the harmony shown on these faces...What a great day! The weather was perfect, the company even better. I am hopeful that you will enjoy browsing this album. Am grateful for this opportunity, and plan to assist my friends, at Live Ride, recording their future events. Bruce, Marilyn, Honey and Spud April 2011 : Of all of the things I have had the chance to do, to be a part of, this was perhaps one of my best days. Meet Bruce Sandifer, and Marilyn, his student from Colorado. Bruce is a pretty laid back teacher, and if you haven't figured out that he is steeped in Vaquero Traditions, and horsemanship, these photos will help you understand. Currently Bruce accepts students of all riding abilities, introducing them to the traditions of the Pacific Slope. The fact that his home over looks the Pacific, with views of the Channel Islands, and the fragrace of orange blossoms and salt air, that tangles with horse and leather..you get the flavor of how perfect the pacific slope is. And it is just about perfect. Bruce makes Bridle horses. He also helps riders achieve their personal best..helps them "unlearn" some habits, and relearn patterns that serve the horse better. Showing you step by step, riding next to you to encourage, and to help you change your seat just a smidge, or hold your reins just so, he tells you how respectful the relationship between horse and man is..watching him, you begin to understand. Marilyn, a long time rider, with both dressage and hunter jumpers under her belt, "in a past life"...has been in love with the traditional Vaquero ways for years, her desire to become accomplished and in tune with her horses, bringing along several young horses herself, is an inspiration. When the opportunity arose for her to participate in a coveted one on one session with Bruce...she was on the next plane out. Santa Barbara, here she comes! Toting her saddle all the way from Colorado..she is dedicated to bettering herself, so she can be better for her horses..and she came to the right place. Marilyn was introduced to Spud. Spud is a big buff buckskin, topping out at over 16 hands. He is a bridle horse...Marilyn, in her boots, is pushing 5 feet, and she is a bridle horse rider. The following photos are just a smattering of the day...the morning, really. I was outta there by 3 to beat the traffic, and Bruce believes in "doing", so, they were off for an outside ride. Part of Marilyns day included riding at the big ranch in Goleta, where she could practice her technique..practice them in "real time" then back to the arena for another full day of instruction. Bruce is an advocate of using the good silver for everyday occasions, and you will see his horses "dressed" in the finest. Bruce Haener, bit maker from Nipomo, Ca, has been working closely with Mr. Sandifer~turning out the finest one of a kind spade bits, I have ever seen. The bits have substance, they feel good, and are delicate of detail, balanced and beautiful. This collection of bits provides an education in and of themselves, the intricate design dedication to traditions, are made to enhance a horse' natural ability. Buck in Riverside, Ca. April 2011 : April brought us some pretty special events...one was the colt starting class that Buck Brannaman put together, for the clinic at Don and Val Chase' home, in Riverside, Ca. A full 13 colts were started, and it was grand. This is the only colt starting class in Southern California. The morning I attended, was an incredible testament to what good horsemanship is all about. Some folks were more skilled then others, some new to this style of horsemanship, I take particular delight in seeing their progress, as they start to understand how to offer their horses a better deal. Astounding, and rewarding..to say the least. Buck was equally in tuned to the riders, and their horses. Gets after some for pickin' on their ponies, and asks others to step up..not an easy task to manage a horsemanship class with so many riders, but by gosh, that is just what happened..everyone agreed. Progress made. Ahaaaaaaaaaaa moments.. Always looking for the try in both horse and rider. I was blown away by the distances traveled by so many, in this economy, it is perhaps more of a stretch then in past years, but if you wanted to get the most "value" for your money..this was THE place to be. As you look thru some of the photos, I will say that I only attended 1 day, so if I missed you it was not intentional. A big thanks to Shane for riding the little paint horse, helping him sort out his feet, and his mind, in the horsemanship class. As with everything "horse", skimping on groundwork shows up later so, Buck stressed the need to do just that...and not rush a horse, and the folks I observed were really putting things together, for themselves, and their horses. Been a long time since I have been to one of Buck's clinics, not since Jerry Sterling passed away, a few years ago, and I can see the great progress that has been made by so many in these past few years..whoooohoooooo...great stuff..loved every minute of it. Thanks for inviting me Val, it was a great clinic...well attended, a ton of spectators, and a full colt class, and horsemanship class..excellent! love, p.

Broken Arrow Branding March 18 2011 : There was quite a bit of activity at the Gather and Branding at the Arrow Ranch..just one of those days..of course, Janine tells me that it was all due to the the "super moon"...The weather was gorgeous... and the girls outdid themselves..Jeremy had gotten hurt earlier in the week, and was not roping..but Brandie and Angie took on the majority of duties...Angie, down from Goldbeach Oregon that is her on the dark mare with the star..Poppy. Never underestimate the will and drive in THAT little mare..she gathered the day before, and got in the branding pen and roped all day long. Never missed a beat..a pleasure to be around, and a working fool. Brandie likes to head, and Angie can scoop those heels like nobody's business. As Jeremy said at dinner, Angie and her good mare were a God Send. You had better believe that. I would work with that good horse, and Angie, any day of the week..Joe and Vaquero came along for the afternoon, added a little relief for Angie and Brandie. And with the ground crew, Stefanie, Wiley, Stan all lined out for innoculations, and castrating, those babies were all put to bed with their mamas, to rest up, and then go back out to high ground next morning...good to see a nice healthy pen of youngsters, fat on the spring grass..AND we all had dinner by dark-time..quite the day.. You girls, rocked it. Que Bueno.

for susan : Susan, decided it was high time that somebody put together a video/film of the Traditional Vaquero legacy...the result is the first film in a series to be released in the coming months. Currently enjoying much admiration, and adulation, the film "The Gathering" made a partail debut, in February, at the Autry Muesum. These are some crowd shots, and fun things, to commemorate the evening. A great time was had by all, and Susan is off to a great start. The day was beautiful, but we should have scheduled this for later in the day..poor little babies, not used to this bright sunlight in Idaho. EVERYBODY was squinty, even me..the only one who wasn't was the snow man. Hope they will find a few shots they like in this mix. These grandbabies are gorgeous, and I can sure see why Idaho is calling John and Buffy. Their beautiful home, and grounds were such a delight, but I can see why being away from these beautiful grandbabies would be hard. Jeremy Dunn Ojai/Kevin, Wiley and Stef. : My kinda day. Superior weather..we had a little rain, we had a little sun..but we mostly had a blast. I know I have mentioned to you, that several mustangs take part in these clinics..Jeremy Dunn, many of you know from his outstanding participation a couple of years ago, with his big bay gelding, for the Mustang Makeover. That mega event was held in Texas. It was a long haul for his family, the reward was he came in the top 10..if you go to J & B Cattle Co. (that is their web page) there is a great poster you can purchase. Here in Ojai, the reward was some great break through moments..Once again a diverse group, ability and skill wise..all with the desire to better their horsemanship. You'll see my good friend Stefanie, here..she is wearing a flat hat, and in pink..on her good mustang, Timbers..the first shot here is one of Timbers and Stefanie, so you of the "mustang", can keep tabs on that good horse..also, you will see a chunky red roan gelding, a man with a beard is riding him, brown slicker ..that horse, too, is a mustang. Kevin, on his good sorrel gelding..with his "butter hands"..so soft, and kind while helping his good horse to make it. Wiley, on his giant good blue roan ranch horse, Hank..I really enjoy participating, and being able to "show" folks just how great they are doing..how straight they are sitting, how well they do, making progress, sometimes little steps, and sometimes by leaps and bounds. Stefanie and Wiley invited us all to their beautiful home for lunch. We were able to relax, and discuss the things we wanted to accomplish with our horses..it was a great day, in Ojai. Jeremy Dunn/moonraker 2/13/11 : The season is underway..brushing up on horsemanship skills with the help and the guidance of Jeremy Dunn..here, at Moonraker ranch, in the high desert of California. This was a diverse group, in both ability and skill, and so much fun to see all of these fine folks enjoying an intimate day with their horses..a luxury for sure, in this day and age. I loved watching the different breeds of horses, from gaited, to breeding stock paint, to arab all participating..these photos are from the morning session, concentration on groundwork, and touching on riding..I was not there for the afternoon session, but, am sure it was just about perfect.

Vaquero Fiesta Vendors 2010 WHOHOOOOOOOOOOO! : Did someone say, whooooohooooooooooooooo....OH, me, I did.. And so did everyone else..We had a blast with all this loot.I have never subscribed to the "less is more" ideal, when it come to plunder, booty and loot...so, I am bringing my trade bag, next year, for sure...One thing I know for sure...If you can not find what you would like, here...all you have to do is ask, because these vendors, saddle makers, braiders, can make you just about anything you would like, and you will stay on budget, too. Please, let me list some of these great folks, who strive to enhance our Vaquero Traditions, with functional, and fine~fine workmanship. An honor to rub shoulders with them..please feel free to contact them directly should you need any plunder yourselves..I am already workin on my list for next year. I have had my eye on that leather bag with the horses on it, for quite a while. I think it was Blackies personal bag..drats. (Mr. Gomersall makes some fine bags..just right for a camera, eh?) Featuring traditional roping, as you would see everyday on a working ranch..the names of the loops have a sing-songy connection to the past..Johnny Blocker, Houlihan, Del Viento, side arm, overhead, figure eights..all have a specific pattern, a decided appeal, besides just being "pretty", they are down right practical in a herd situation. Some more fancy then others, but all something to see.. Considering that these "long ropes"..rawhide reatas are 60 feet or longer, you get the drift that these participants are the cream of the crop. If you have never attended an outdoor competition, this is a great place to get your feet wet. Paul Woods, our favorite "mouth" kept busy at the microphone, keeping participants straight, naming the loops thrown, was a wonderful integral part of this event..Jess kept the entire deal rolling, and that is sayin' something..it is a big deal, getting an event like this together.. As you can tell, this weekend event is very family oriented..participation includes kids, kids, and..some of the kids are toddlers..look for Dave Stoddards son, the Reata Man.. one of the delights of the Caldwells, is seeing that these time honored ways, ARE pased along to the next generation. In our hurry up world, this is a refreshing change of pace..horses, and kids are brought along slowly..you'll see Cody Hill, Sterling Grosskopf..Tater-bug, Noah, and GIRLS practicing their loops. Of course, I am always into horse jewelry, and these boys never disapoint..the gear they use on these horses ~the attention to detail~ there truly is nothing like sunshine on silver. The pride they take in outfitting their horses heralds to the Vaqueros in days of old..brought from that far away time to our present day..we are blessed to see the design and functionality of these pieces today. Always a pleasure to see, Bruce Haners bit work,Blackies rawhide work, saddle makers from Idaho to California represented, as well as Buckaroo Businesses, Buffalo Run Boot Makers..I will list some of the great vendors here, too! We had a blast... Celeste/Paul Dietz : Although I was only able to attend one day, photographing this great clinic, I was so impressed with Paul Dietz.. He was so intent on assisting each participant in his clinic..taking the time with working on a soft feel. Seeing things from your horses point of view. Paul is a very humble teacher..a man that makes it easy to ask questions. Many different levels of riders attended this clinic. I was fortunate to catch part of the cattle working session..always a fun thing..watching "new to cattle" horses begin to enjoy tracking, boxing, and participating. Of course, there were some great hands, watching Cindy and her big palomino get down to business was a hoot. He DOES like cattle work..Thank you to Celeste and Tammy for putting this nice clinic together, thrilled to see Robert Chavez supporting us, and explaining saddle fitting to the group..it was a great day..am looking forwards to attending this fall. thanking you all for the patience while I dealt with problems with my eyesight..am glad to have these photos for you, and hope you enjoy them as you recall the beautiful day.

No stranger to hard work..you will find her grooming, riding, training, consulting, counseling, cajoling, cussing..(only sometimes) and caring, for all the fine folks she works with, clients, and barn staff, alike. In Norco, you could not find a more pleansant show barn. Low key, friendly. Yet producing winners. Amazing. Had the pleasure of attending the first day of the Arab Horse show, in Pamona, on Friday. Of course, I was there for my long time pal, Vickie. She had her little bay horse Kit out for his second show. As you can see by the photo evidence, Kit did quite well for her. Didja see that Blue ribbon? He is just a 4 year old, and a happy camper..he seems to really like this horse show world, from the fine tuning, to the fine grooming, Kit is a horse who enjoys his lot in life. suzi's extreme race : These are random photos taken at the Extreme Cowboy Race, held this fall in Acton, Ca. Sort of a spur of the moment event..for me...in more ways then one. Evident is the hard work and dedication to this event, drawing more and more participants..Held at the Vincent Hill Arena, with the 14 freeway on one side, and train tracks in full use, I was thinking these horses really can handle "extreme" situations. Tho I was only able to attend for a portion of one day...I was so impressed with the horses "can-do" attitude. Suzi is the little yellow paint mare, she is an up and coming "extreme-ist", in her own right. Amazing! I just loved it, and hope you do, too.

Vicki, Dawn & Donna Arab Show/LAEC 2010 : Girls, girls, girls. Remind me of why I don't like that equidome. Sidelight, backlight, overhead light..blinding light, for crap backgrounds..oiy. A photographers nightmare...that and being about 6 feet higher then the arena floor, makes for some tricky stuff. (You are not supposed to hang OFF of the railing, even tho I did----how attractive, I know)...so...some of these angles are pretty darn funky, eh? when we go to Santa Barbara, we will rock. Forgive me, I know these shots are not up to par..if there are any you see that you need, let me know. Having said all that, I want to tell you how much fun this really is for me. Knowing each of you, so dear to me. Vickie, and Kit..barely a team with 5 weeks traning, heck, Vickie has owned him for only 5 weeks..he is one magnificent 4 year old. But that is my Vick..pretty damned gutsy...with just 4 rides on this colt..and in the show pen.. I love the shots of Rhonda in the line up, with the laid back Kit..pretty traumatized for this 4 yr. old, eh? He is just relaxed and having a fun time..gotta love that, I sure do. If he had a watch on, he woulda been lookin at it..what a great horse. Rhonda Karsten, fabu barn in Norco, California. I have been there, personally on a photo shoot..not a stuck up person there..no snobs..nothin' just some neat folks enjoying the journey of making great horses. Some pretty happy campers in that barn. Donna and June-bug, a golden half arab mare..just exquisite... their first time showing, as well, under the guidance of Dusty Morgan, training in Agua Dulce, California..Pretty close to my stomping ground, and am pleased to say, another great barn. Many of you have come to know Dusty, and her work ethic. Nuff said..if you are looking to excell, this is a good place to be. Am really proud and pleased to be able to support both Rhonda and Dusty..two women with grace, detemination, talent, and a great feel for how horses (and people) can realize their full potential----and have a blast doing just that. Sprinkled in this mix is Dawn Kimball, and her good horse, Pleasure. One of Dusty's clients..and friend to me for over 20 years. Nice to see the spark there for this seasoned pair. Pleasure is just a gorgeous individual, mentally and physically..I love to watch them..am honored to be able to capture some of the moments that made up this stellar weekend, even if the shots are not as hot as Santa Barbara..I know you understand the Equidome, is not for sissys..and as always, I gave it my best shot. Looking forwards to 2011, with you all.. You know I love yas. Vicki and her Ponies : Meet my friend Vicki. Life has dealt her a pretty hard hand this year..the loss of her father, coupled with the loss of her best horse friend, Tanna.. Her beloved Tanna, her big chestnut Arab cross gelding...love of her life...had to be put down earlier this year. After months of exhaustive worry, and the best of veterinary care, Vicki and Dr. Cox made the decision they knew would come, and had fought against for several years..Tanna was in far to much unrelenting pain. Hard decisions were made. And. Life goes on. The search began for a nice show quality gelding, who upon retirement from the show pen, would have the brains, body and balance to carry Vicki not only into the show pen, but out on to the trail, when his show career is over. I thought she would never find the right individual. But Vicki knew what she wanted, what she was looking for. She looked from California to Texas. She found Psydkick. A bodied up 4 year old purebred gelding. "Kit"..passed his extensive vet check with flying colors. Tho just a baby at 4, with limited showing, he is proving to be quite the little mover. A can do attitude, coupled with natural ability and athleticism made Kit the perfect choice. These photos are "working" photos..I did not retouch them, I wanted Vicki to have a "starting point"..years from now she can look back, warts and all, and pinpoint the progress. So Kit is a little hair ball, sweaty, and figuring out what is expected of him...both Vicki and Kit are new to the bosal. In fact I am pleased to report that this was the first time Vicki has ever ridden with a bosal. Kit has one up on her, by about a week. I love his expression, and that neck! Guided by Rhonda Karsten, whose beautiful facility in Norco is rapidly becoming the "it" place to create champions..and no wonder. I am a firm believer in horses telling on their keepers and trainers. The horses at Rondas place, are fat, sleek and happy. With winter coming on, and less then 3 weeks with Rhonda..I will let you see for yourself the quality of training Kit is enjoying..what a novel idea. A show barn where horses greet you with a nicker, and a "pick me" attitude. Vicki will be campaigning Kit this year, with her first show Thanksgiving weekend..check back here to see the progress this team is making. Good luck Vicki and Kit, the world is your oyster. love, p

Jeremy Dunn Friends Branding : There is no way to describe in words..how a day of gathering and branding at the Broken Arrow makes you feel. Maybe if a picture really is worth a thousand words, you can catch a glimpse of this great way of life. The little white faced calf..just a week or so old..was the little one of the bunch. Travis was so careful with this baby..Jeremy instructed Stan and Martin to carry him back to his mama...so that he wouldn't have to be away from her, and stressed..being a baby and all. Brandie, gets out there with the best of em, the epitome of the word Ranch Wife. Throws a mean loop, and has a ready laugh. Kids always welcome at the Broken Arrow, in fact I have never been there when there wasn't a handful of kids, catching tadpoles, swimmin' in the pond, riding Chico the wonder pony....You'll see Martin here, too. He traveled with his family half way around the world to ride at the Californios with Jeremy. He and his beautiful Annelie, and wonderful kids, made me so happy..Jeremy has his new reata that he braided himself, I tried to feature it here..hope you'll notice it, as you scroll thru..My dear freinds Stan and Janine, Stan the manager of the ground crew supreme..so nice to spend the day with them. The Broken Arrow. Where Friends, and Family, are one. I love every minute of it. And hope you do, too.

Peter Campbell/Morning Sun Ranch/Watsonville : A beautiful clinic, held at Gina's place, Morning Sun Ranch, in Watsonville, Ca. Perfect sanded arena, meticulously maintained, the facility besides being in a beautiful setting, boasts access to perfect riding trails. The horses who were "travelers"..(some folks came from close to 400 miles just to attend this Peter Campbell Clinic) , were able to relax, and settle into their weekend pony "bed and breakfast", Morning Sun style. And they were not disappointed. Peter Campbell held an excellent clinic. Though many were new to this "traditional" style, based on vaquero style of riding, all riders brought with them a can do attitude, and willingness to learn and challenge both themselves, and their horses. A full three days is what you can expect from Peter. And I mean full..so much so, that Peter made the statement that if he had his druthers, we would all be riding a minimum of 2 hours a day, for two months prior to his arrival for a clinic..(I am taking that advice, and starting NOW, for the clinic in May!) both horse and rider physically fit..Peter excells at showing you a series of excercises,but most important, he takes the time to answer the question "Why" as well as the "How". Starting out with foundation horsemanship in the morning concentrating on groundwork so necessary to help you and your horse build, and begin communicating. Peter was relentless on the importance of starting where the horse is, and not where YOU are. More then one of these accomplished horses, eventers, jumpers, and trail horses alike, had never been introduced to groundwork. Watching these wonderful people put the nuts and bolts together, building a foundation is incredible. What a delight to see the progress made. Peter explaining that all of these "excercises" can be done "at home" breaking the excercises down to managable "doable" tasks. Que Bueno! A special treat for all of us, was riding with Robert Chavez, one of the most influencial and accomplished saddle makers in our country. Robert is a man who rides side by side with us, and cares about not only the horses comfort, but ours, as well. Robert gave an impromptu demonstration on saddle fitting for us, and the reasons why saddles fit..or don't fit. On the spot, he added to his waiting list, and saddles were ordered! Currently Robert is building saddles that Peter Campbell has approved of, by putting his name on the style.meeting his specs. I can not wait to see these saddles. Many thanks to Judith, and Gina, who made this remarkable event, one to remember. The hospitality, the facility and Peter's ability to teach the human, and help the horse make better choices---enhance their relationships, made this one of the best clinics I have attended. A big thanks to all of you, participants, beautiful ponies. and Peter..I loved it all. What an honor for me to participate..hope to see you all again, soon. Don't forget the Peter Campbell Clinic in May, 2011 in Tehachapi I hope to ride with you then..and you can count on me to be with you again, when Peter comes back for next years clinic. BOB 2010 : BOB, 2010...Thanking my Biker Brothers, for showing such patience, while I worked thru these photos..and grateful for the Blessing that you all are to me...Lisa, Ned, Feo, Rick..an honor for me to participate, and celebrate the day. Live Ride, a Bible based Christian Church providing ministry to all, graciously hosted this event. Their blessings were given to biker, and non biker alike. Pinpointing their relationship with God, as the driving force of this oganization, this brotherhood-embracing bikerhood, graced by deep seeded spirituality, hard won-- welcomed one and all. The rule of the day was Bible in a Baggie...Everyone received a Bible in a Baggie, and Bibles were given as both young and old, saved, and not-so-saved received their blessing. All things wheeled were blessed, from garden tractor to hard tail, even bikes that you pedal were present to be graced, in the comfort received by these blessings. The eats were excellent, great bbq, chicken, burgers, the works, the rocking Christian band---all of us, including myself were humbled by the events of the day. I was thankful for the oppoturnity to do what I love- camera-in-hand, capture the spirit of this day. I loved this joyous day. Sundowners, Angels, and many more clubs partook of the blessing and festivities, as you scroll through these photos, you will see many colors..but what will strike you is the harmony shown on these faces...What a great day! The weather was perfect, the company even better. I am hopeful that you will enjoy browsing this album. Dawns Trail Class/Earl Warren Show Grounds : Dusty Morgan, an Arabian horse trainer, in Agua Dulce, Ca. her client--and my friend, Dawn attended the premier West Coast Region 2 Arabian horse show, in Santa Barbara. Held at the famous Earl Warren Show Ground, no surprise that it was overcast. Beach City, Santa Barbara...No surprise that these elegant horses were the shiny part of the day. I was only able to attend in the morning, but got some great shots of Dawn, her pals, the pups, and her most gorgeous bay gelding, Pleasure. And he is. Gorgeous, and a Pleasure to watch.. ETI Schooling Show/Carney Corral 6/12/2010 : A wonderful day 6/12/10 the Carney Corral, located in oak laden Sand Canyon, Canyon Country California. The Carney Corral hosted the ETI Schooling Show, Newhall Riders, corral number 69. As you might guess, looking through these photos, Carney Corral is rapidly becoming the premiere horse boarding, training and event location in this area. The days events brought out seasoned riders, as well as brand new to showing kids. The shady oaks, great comanionship, sense of fair play enhanced the day. The highlight of the day was watching little Manny the Mustang win a blue ribbon for trail in hand..as well as the first "Chase Me Charlie" winner, Hailey Brown. Particiants were diverse in their ability, and all were enjoying the day. Thank you to our judges, our hosts, and the extra hard work from Chris and Pechez. Greg Eliel Clinic 4/23/10-4/26/10 Acton, CA : The long awaited Greg Eliel Clinic, held in Acton, Ca. Our gracious host, Cathy Cooper, and our Clinic organizer, Tammy Ianozzi, prepared a wonderful arena. Easy to teach in, and easy to learn in. Greg is one of those guys who just is a great communicator. Today, the first day, Greg made the effort to ask each and every clinic goer, what their goals were, for their horse..what they liked to do with their horses...and concentrated on ground work..just to see where we were. All skill levels presented themselves today, and what a great thing, that Greg not only helped each horse, but each person, with his consistantly kind banter, and his devotion to speaking as he is doing..so that you can see, and hear just what he is going to do..WHY he is doing what he is doing..and then he allows you the freedom to Learn...and just how we set our horses up for success. You will see in these photos, the pros...the little black mare, so soft, and willing to the beautiful yellow horse, who was braced on all four corners.. Lots of work for all to do today. What did I learn today? Something I always learn..that the smallest things, make the biggest differences, in building a partnership. Sometimes you are a half an inch off, and it shapes things up differently. Broken Arrow Ranch Branding-Jeremy Dunn : April 10-11, 2010 We spent the day, with Jeremy and his family..which is a grand way to spend the day..gathering, sorting and branding. Gathering on Saturday, the weather was incredible. Sorting went well, easy, good folks, good dogs. Sunday turned colder then I like..but, we branded, castrated, and counted noses! Some darn nice looking noses, too. Nice pen of mamas, with some real nice youngsters. Sift through some of these shots..Jeremey's place is at the base of the east side of Tejon. Wild flowers, some good grass..overflowing springs. Just what you would expect from the places on earth where Vaqueros used to gather, on days just like today. Perfect weekend. Thank you Brandie, and Jeremy for requesting that I be a part, and for adherence to traditions we hold so dear. The Dunn family brand of hospitality was enjoyed by all, Jeremy is a great teacher, patient and kind. We are humbled to be the recipients of their hospitality.

Bueno/Manolito el Caballo Bonito : Today, Feb. 12, 2010 marks the start of a journey difficult, and uncertain. Manolito, the 4 year old mustang, was chosen for the Mustang Makeover. Today, is the first day of his life, away from the security of his other bay brothers. Deemed unadoptable, by virtue of age, and color, the BLM, allows these older geldings to be adopted by trainers, who are approved for their skill, patience and concern for the plight of these forgotten souls.. The fee to adopt these horses is $125.00. The Mustangs are loaded into trailers, to go to their new homes. Running blindly into a dark chute, then into the light..on their way..This is where the journey that will save their lives, begins. In the short time span of 90 days, these once wild- and-only-future-was to be canned geldings, Begin a different path. Begin to learn a different way...helped along by people who care enough to donate time, time, time..Not all sweetness and light, but hard gut wrenching work..Then they are off to compete at the Mustang Makeover..compete against themselves, showing how brilliantly they can shine, if given the chance..in the end, they will be auctioned off to new homes. Meet Manolito, and a few of his friends. Their lives are about to change, again. My money is on Manolito. So beautiful in his wildness, it is years that his kind have run free. Lucky for you, if you live in the Southern California area, Greg will be in the Los Angeles area, in April. These photos are from a demonstration Greg gave, in Acton, California. Three horses each with their own issues. Greg walked us through the whys of the behaviors, and then he calmly helped each little horse along. Something most people never get to witness, the calm untangling of a chaotic mind..Greg took us step by step, and allowed us to view each horse, as the horse made the right choices. A tireless champion of the horse, a dedicated teacher, complete in his desire to help you with your horsemanship, you are invited to ride with Greg, in April, for Southern California.Clinics, in Acton.
